Deutsche Telekom’s Access 4.0 team must have been thinking the same. Cookie Dough was the untypically sexy moniker they conceived for the June release of their software-based broadband design (literally SEBA, for SDN-enabled broadband access, with the SDN standing for software-defined network). That was followed in September by Dark Cherry, which brought some juicy new features. Next up is Eggnog, which arrives in December, presumably as Access 4.0 team members are knocking back the real thing. French Vanilla is lined up for March next year before a full production-ready platform appears in the fourth quarter. Deutsche Telekom must hope its Access 4.0 team doesn’t end up with a bad hangover.
As with Telefónica’s related OnLife plan to make a data center out of a central office, Access 4.0 has been a long time in the works. If all goes according to schedule, the new-look broadband technology will finally show up in a commercial network about three years after the project began. That points to the inevitable challenges of replacing dedicated broadband equipment with off-the-shelf chip components -- so-called merchant silicon -- and open source tools. But in a little more than a year, the industry should be able to see the fruits of Deutsche Telekom’s labor. It could be instructive for other service providers keen to bring SEBA to life.
An important goal for the German incumbent is efficiency. Traffic on broadband networks keeps building while sales remain flat: Combined with automation, lower-cost technology that removes unnecessary components could help to protect margins. With the shift toward software, Deutsche Telekom should also be able to introduce new service features more rapidly.
Right now, perhaps the biggest incentive is to bring more competition into the broadband access network. In this way, no single supplier will be able to ’control destiny,’ says a spokesperson for the Open Networking Foundation (ONF), an open source group whose tools feature in Access 4.0. This vision of a multivendor network currently explains much of the telco interest in software, virtualization and open source code. On the broadband side, Deutsche Telekom already has a clear blueprint for its multivendor design.
It looks complex, to say the least. Switching technology comes from Delta Networks, Edgecore Networks and RtBrick, with Broadcom and Hewlett Packard Enterprise contributing chips and servers. Long-standing broadband partner Adtran is bringing expertise in optical line terminals. Indian IT giant Infosys and US-headquartered Radisys are also named in a slide of vendors presented at the Broadband World Forum. Presiding over it all is Reply, an Italian systems integrator named as a ’co-development partner.’ If SEBA takes off outside the Deutsche Telekom group, Reply could be in the hotseat. I had some pretty specific requirements:

All of those other virtual MIDI miniport driver implementations actually developed simple static “loopback” MIDI-ports. Loopback meaning that both ends of this port would be public. Static meaning that the number of ports and their names would be fixed at install-time of the driver (via the inf-file of the driver).
This was not satisfactory, so I looked some more and I found references to dynamic creation of sub-devices. But this was a hard nut to crack. Finally I had been able to locate a guy who was doing something similar for a virtual soundcard-driver for digital-audio-broadcast.
His insights have been invaluable. It still took quite some time to get everything going smoothly, but I finally succeeded in creating this driver.
One problem remained: Since Microsoft introduced Vista, all drivers for 64bit need to be code-signed. Though the idea itself is pretty nifty – to know the specific company that the code running in the kernel comes from – it had a severe drawback:
Only companies incorporated could apply for such a code-signing-certificate. Many people in the driver-development-community urged Microsoft to rectify this. And finally in May of 2010 it has been done. Digidesign 1394 driver download. This is a picture of the ’Gamma Scout with Alert’ Geiger Counter. It has a USB interface on the bottom which can be used to connect the device to a PC in order to query the logged radiation data. There are also other members of the Gamma Scout Family:

The devices most likely differ only in their firmwares, the hardware seems quite identical. Some of the devices have a RS232 interface via a 9-pin SUB-D connector and others (most new ones) have USB. There also are at least two different protocol versions around (from hereon referred to a protocol v1 and protocol v2) which are both supported by the GammaScoutUtil. There seems to be a correlation between the firmware version, the number of digits in the display and the protocol version. As someone suggested on the Internet (I’m unsure how reliable that information is), all Gamma Scouts with firmware version <= 5.43 have a 3-digit display and use protocol version v1. All Gamma Scouts with firmware version >= 6.02 have a 4-digit display and use protocol version v2. You can find out the firmware version by pressing the ’Battery’ button and then the ’Enter’ button. For the ’Gamma Scout Online’, the GammaScoutUtil only supports the features that the ’Gamma Scout Alert’ also has (i.e. Online Mode is not supported at the moment). This is only because I have no access to a online device -- if anybody has such a device and wants to get it running, drop me a note with some details and I’ll try to include support for it.
For the USB versions, the hardware which is used is a FTDI FT232RL is used which is nicely supported by Linux already:
It therefore appears as a serial interface (/dev/ttyUSBn). A query I did with the vendor (Dr. Mirow) in order to get access to the protocol details remained unanswered. Therefore I re-engineered the v2-protocol and wrote a device driver with which you can use the device. Luckily, the protocol was quite easy to understand. For the protocol v1 some info could be found on the net and I had the help of Jörg Wartenberg, who kindly provided the test data from his device (since I do not own a protocol v1 Gamma Scout)2 Communication Protocol v12.1 Commands and Responses
Older models of the Gamma Scout family use the v1 protocol. This is, as the v2, based on ASCII communication, but a little bit more limited. Most notably, the PC cannot initiate the connection, but the ’PC mode’ has to be activated first by pressing the according button of the Gamma Scout. This makes the Gamma Scout with a v1-protocol virtually useless for continuous data logging. Communication is performed with 2400 baud, 7E1, no echo. Note that every response (in contrast to the v2 protocol) is not only preceded by ’rn’, but also by a space character (denoted explicitly as s for more clarity). In contrast to the protocol version 2, special command codes are slightly different. The first three bytes of the log encode the serial number of the device in little endian using the ’decimal interpreted as hexadecimal’ representation (i.e. for the above device, that serial would be 10203). At position 0x20 a uint16 value is stored in little endian byte order indicating the first invalid address in the log. The actual log then starts at 0x100. For the example above, the first invalid log address is 0x131 (the uint16 value at position 0x20), therefore the log is from 0x100 to 0x130 (inclusively). The log itself contains encoded command codes and impulse counts. The log that is issued upon sending the ’b’ command is also quite easy to understand. First it is necessary to know that the log does not get reset when it is cleared, only the pointer gets reset to the beginning. Therefore it is necessary to query how much data is valid by using the ’v’ command before issuing ’b’. Each line contains 33 bytes of data (i.e. 66 characters + ’rn’, so 68 bytes per line). This is a picture of the ’Gamma Scout with Alert’ Geiger Counter. It has a USB interface on the bottom which can be used to connect the device to a PC in order to query the logged radiation data. There are also other members of the Gamma Scout Family:

*Gamma Scout with Alert and Online Mode (’Gamma Scout Online’)
The devices most likely differ only in their firmwares, the hardware seems quite identical. Some of the devices have a RS232 interface via a 9-pin SUB-D connector and others (most new ones) have USB. There also are at least two different protocol versions around (from hereon referred to a protocol v1 and protocol v2) which are both supported by the GammaScoutUtil. There seems to be a correlation between the firmware version, the number of digits in the display and the protocol version. As someone suggested on the Internet (I’m unsure how reliable that information is), all Gamma Scouts with firmware version <= 5.43 have a 3-digit display and use protocol version v1. All Gamma Scouts with firmware version >= 6.02 have a 4-digit display and use protocol version v2. You can find out the firmware version by pressing the ’Battery’ button and then the ’Enter’ button. For the ’Gamma Scout Online’, the GammaScoutUtil only supports the features that the ’Gamma Scout Alert’ also has (i.e. Online Mode is not supported at the moment). This is only because I have no access to a online device -- if anybody has such a device and wants to get it running, drop me a note with some details and I’ll try to include support for it.
For the USB versions, the hardware which is used is a FTDI FT232RL is used which is nicely supported by Linux already:
It therefore appears as a serial interface (/dev/ttyUSBn). A query I did with the vendor (Dr. Mirow) in order to get access to the protocol details remained unanswered. Therefore I re-engineered the v2-protocol and wrote a device driver with which you can use the device. Luckily, the protocol was quite easy to understand. For the protocol v1 some info could be found on the net and I had the help of Jörg Wartenberg, who kindly provided the test data from his device (since I do not own a protocol v1 Gamma Scout)2 Communication Protocol v12.1 Commands and Responses
Older models of the Gamma Scout family use the v1 protocol. This is, as the v2, based on ASCII communication, but a little bit more limited. Most notably, the PC cannot initiate the connection, but the ’PC mode’ has to be activated first by pressing the according button of the Gamma Scout. This makes the Gamma Scout with a v1-protocol virtually useless for continuous data logging. Communication is performed with 2400 baud, 7E1, no echo. Note that every response (in contrast to the v2 protocol) is not only preceded by ’rn’, but also by a space character (denoted explicitly as s for more clarity). In contrast to the protocol version 2, special command codes are slightly different. The first three bytes of the log encode the serial number of the device in little endian using the ’decimal interpreted as hexadecimal’ representation (i.e. for the above device, that serial would be 10203). At position 0x20 a uint16 value is stored in little endian byte order indicating the first invalid address in the log. The actual log then starts at 0x100. For the example above, the first invalid log address is 0x131 (the uint16 value at position 0x20), therefore the log is from 0x100 to 0x130 (inclusively). The log itself contains encoded command codes and impulse counts. The command codes always have 0xf in the first nibble of the first byte (i.e. every hex-sequence that starts with 0xf? is a command code, everything else is a impulse count):CommandDescriptionExamplefe [mm] [hh] [DD] [MM] [YY]New date and time has been set. The communication protocol v2 the Gamma Scout uses is trivially easy to understand and implement. Communication is done with 9600 baud, 7E1, no echo. The protocol is ASCII-based, you can use for example picocom to play around with it a little. The log that is issued upon sending the ’b’ command is also quite easy to understand. First it is necessary to know that the log does not get reset when it is cleared, only the pointer gets reset to the beginning. Therefore it is necessary to query how much data is valid by using the ’v’ command before issuing ’b’. Each line contains 33 bytes of data (i.e. 66 characters + ’rn’, so 68 bytes per line). The last byte is the checksum, which can be calculated by taking the sum of the preceding 32 bytes modulo 256. Then while traversing the log, if the first byte is 0xf5, it indicates a special command and has variable length. If it does not start with 0xf5, it is a impulse count, coded in big endian format. First, the value is converted using big endian decoding (most significant byte first): Then the exponent and mantissa can be extracted (format is eeeeeemm mmmmmmmm): The two least significant bits of the exponent are then mangled together: If the resulting exponent is zero, the impulse count is the mantissa value. Otherwise, the impulse count is retrieved by adding 210 to the mantissa and then multiplying by 2exponent - 1. In other words:4.1 Examples
For the last example (ab cd), converting to big endian yields 0xabcd. The exponent and mantissa therefore are 42 and 973. After mangling the two least significant bits of the exponent together, the exponent is 21. Therefore, the result is: (973 + 1024) * 220 = 1997 * 220 = 2094006272.

After plugging in the Gamma Scout into your USB port, check with dmesg which device it is recognized as. Usually this will be /dev/ttyUSB0. Then, you can call gammascoututil to check if it finds your Gamma Scout. Putting the Gamma Scout into PC mode beforehand is actually not necessary, the software takes care of that.
Then, let’s first read out the internal log into a text file:
What you might want to do if your have the tool running via a cronjob (i.e. have the setting log in a small interval and clear the data nightly) is log into a database. This issue occurs because the USB audio 2.0 driver (usbaudio2.sys) isn’t classified as a generic driver in Windows 10 Version 1703. Windows 7 includes 1394ohci.sys, a new IEEE 1394 bus driver that supports faster speeds and alternative media as defined in the IEEE-1394b specification. The 1394ohci.sys bus driver is a single (monolithic) device driver, implemented by using the kernel-mode driver framework (KMDF). The legacy 1394 bus driver (available in earlier versions of Windows) includes multiple device drivers that were implemented by using the Windows Driver Model (WDM) in a port/miniport configuration. The 1394ohci.sys bus driver replaces the legacy port driver, 1394bus.sys, and the primary miniport driver, ochi1394.sys.
The new 1394ohci.sys bus driver is fully backward compatible with the legacy bus driver. This topic describes some of the known differences in behavior between the new and the legacy 1394 bus driver.
Note
The 1394ohci.sys driver is a system driver that is included in Windows. It is automatically loaded when you install a 1394 controller. This is not a redistributable driver that you can download separately.I/O Request Completion
All I/O requests that are sent to the new 1394 bus driver return STATUS_PENDING because the 1394ohci.sys bus driver is implemented by using KMDF instead of WDM. This behavior differs from that of the legacy 1394 bus driver, in which certain I/O requests complete immediately.
A client driver must wait until I/O requests sent to the new 1394 bus driver are complete. You can provide an I/O completion routine that is called after the request is complete. The status of the completed I/O request is in the IRP.Configuration ROM Retrieval
The new 1394 bus driver tries to use asynchronous block transactions at faster bus speeds to retrieve the contents of a node’s configuration ROM. The legacy 1394 bus driver uses asynchronous quadlet reads at S100 speed—or 100 megabits per second (Mbps). The 1394ohci.sys bus driver also uses the values that are specified in generation and max_rom entries of the node’s configuration ROM header to improve the retrieval of the remaining content of the configuration ROM. The 1394ohci.sys bus driver requires a physical layer (PHY) that supports IEEE-1394a or IEEE-1394b. It does not support a PHY that supports IEEE-1394-1995. This requirement is due to the 1394ohci.sys bus driver’s exclusive use of short (arbitrated) bus resets.NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION Structure Usage
A client driver can reference the device extension in the 1394 bus driver associated with the physical device object (PDO) for the device that the client driver controls. This device extension is described by the NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION structure. In 1394ohci.sys, this structure remains at the same location as in the legacy 1394 bus driver, but the nonstatic members of the structure might not be valid. When a client driver uses the new 1394 bus driver, they must make sure that the data accessed in NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION is valid. The static members of NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION that contain valid data are Tag, DeviceObject, and PortDeviceObject. All other members NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION are nonstatic, which the client driver must not reference.Gap Count Optimization
The default behavior of the 1394ohci.sys bus driver is to optimize the gap count when it finds only IEEE 1394a devices on the 1394 bus, excluding the local node. For example, if the system that is running 1394ohci.sys has a host controller that complies with IEEE 1394b but all devices on the bus comply with IEEE 1394a, then the new 1394 bus driver tries to optimize the gap count.
Gap count optimization occurs only if the 1394ohci.sys bus driver determines that the local node is the bus manager.Digidesign 1394 Driver Download Win 7

If a node sets both of the bits in the speed (sp) field in the self-id packet, then 1394ohci.sys considers the node to comply with IEEE-1394b. The 1394ohci.sys bus driver is a single (monolithic) device driver, implemented by using the kernel-mode driver framework (KMDF). The legacy 1394 bus driver (available in earlier versions of Windows) includes multiple device drivers that were implemented by using the Windows Driver Model (WDM) in a port/miniport configuration. The 1394ohci.sys bus driver replaces the legacy port driver, 1394bus.sys, and the primary miniport driver, ochi1394.sys.
The new 1394ohci.sys bus driver is fully backward compatible with the legacy bus driver. This topic describes some of the known differences in behavior between the new and the legacy 1394 bus driver.
Note
The 1394ohci.sys driver is a system driver that is included in Windows. It is automatically loaded when you install a 1394 controller. This is not a redistributable driver that you can download separately.I/O Request Completion
All I/O requests that are sent to the new 1394 bus driver return STATUS_PENDING because the 1394ohci.sys bus driver is implemented by using KMDF instead of WDM. This behavior differs from that of the legacy 1394 bus driver, in which certain I/O requests complete immediately.
A client driver must wait until I/O requests sent to the new 1394 bus driver are complete. You can provide an I/O completion routine that is called after the request is complete. The status of the completed I/O request is in the IRP.Configuration ROM Retrieval
The new 1394 bus driver tries to use asynchronous block transactions at faster bus speeds to retrieve the contents of a node’s configuration ROM. The legacy 1394 bus driver uses asynchronous quadlet reads at S100 speed—or 100 megabits per second (Mbps). The 1394ohci.sys bus driver also uses the values that are specified in generation and max_rom entries of the node’s configuration ROM header to improve the retrieval of the remaining content of the configuration ROM. The 1394ohci.sys bus driver requires a physical layer (PHY) that supports IEEE-1394a or IEEE-1394b. It does not support a PHY that supports IEEE-1394-1995. This requirement is due to the 1394ohci.sys bus driver’s exclusive use of short (arbitrated) bus resets.NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION Structure Usage
A client driver can reference the device extension in the 1394 bus driver associated with the physical device object (PDO) for the device that the client driver controls. This device extension is described by the NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION structure. In 1394ohci.sys, this structure remains at the same location as in the legacy 1394 bus driver, but the nonstatic members of the structure might not be valid. When a client driver uses the new 1394 bus driver, they must make sure that the data accessed in NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION is valid. The static members of NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION that contain valid data are Tag, DeviceObject, and PortDeviceObject. All other members NODE_DEVICE_EXTENSION are nonstatic, which the client driver must not reference.Gap Count Optimization
The default behavior of the 1394ohci.sys bus driver is to optimize the gap count when it finds only IEEE 1394a devices on the 1394 bus, excluding the local node. For example, if the system that is running 1394ohci.sys has a host controller that complies with IEEE 1394b but all devices on the bus comply with IEEE 1394a, then the new 1394 bus driver tries to optimize the gap count.

The 1394ohci.sys bus driver determines whether a device complies with IEEE-1394a by the speed setting in the node’s self-id packet. If a node sets both of the bits in the speed (sp) field in the self-id packet, then 1394ohci.sys considers the node to comply with IEEE-1394b. If the speed field contains any other value, then 1394ohci.sys considers the node to comply with IEEE-1394a. The gap count value that is used is based on table E-1 in the IEEE-1394a specification, which provides the gap count as a function of hops. The 1394ohci.sys bus driver does not compute the gap count.
